Beware this Danger Signal
Today's Devotional
The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing , 1 Corinthians 1:18 (NIV).
There is contained in these words a very weighty suggestion to those who view belief in the gospel as evidence of intellectual weakness to which they are themselves superior. What the passage suggests is that this mode of viewing the gospel is one of the characteristic marks of those who fall into perdition; and therefore that the conscious possession of such a view should be a serious warning to those who entertain it of their being in a state of danger for eternity. The opposite mental condition, a belief, namely, that the preaching of the gospel is “the power of God to those who are saved,” is that which is appropriate to all true Christians, and, therefore, is an indication of safety, not less than of soundness.
O gracious Lord Christ, deliver me, I earnestly entreat Thee, from those unworthy thoughts of Thy gospel, which should yield to the soul that holds them a sign of its danger for eternity; and so do Thou bring me beneath the teaching of Thy cross, that I see clearly therein the power of God for salvation, to the glory of Thee the Savior.
About the author and the source
In the preface to his Thoughts of Christ, Lord Kinloch declared that he had long thought the likeliest mode of combating infidelity would be to promote a perception of Christ’s human personality. His Thoughts aimed to do that. He was also the author of the hymn “Mansions for Me” and a judge for the Court of Sessions, Edinburgh.
