Khartoum Gordon - 1878

General Charles Gordon.

Introduction

Charles George Gordon was a British soldier who had unbroken success leading Chinese troops against rebels in Taiping and moderate success in suppressing slave trade in Africa. He died in the Sudan after withstanding a one-year siege at Khartoum. (He was there because he had overstepped his orders.) Gordon was typical of a class of soldiers who draw their strength from Christian beliefs. He firmly believed that the Bible is the word of God. He also believed in eternal life and wrote on this day 6 October 1878:

Quote

“You cannot evade it: we are each composed of two beings—one of which we see, which is temporal, which will fulfill certain works in the world; and one unseen, eternal, and which is always in conformity with God. One is sometimes uppermost, sometimes subdued, but rules in the long run, for it is eternal, while the other is temporal.”
