Today's Devotional

Happy is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gets understanding —Proverbs 3:13.

“Buried in the shadows of the night,”
We lie till Christ restores the light;
Wisdom descends to heal the blind,
And chase the darkness of the mind.
 
Our guilty souls are drown’d in tears
Till his atoning blood appears;
Then we awake from deep distress,
And sing “The Lord our Righteousness.”

From the attentive and prayerful study of the book of Proverbs many ancient and modern writers have considered the “Wisdom” spoken of in so many chapters, to be Christ, the Wisdom of God. (Origen, St. Ambrose, Scott.)

In chapter 8:23, “I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was,”—set up is by some translated, “anointed.” The Anointed, or Christ, is also, in 1 Corinthians 1:24, called “Wisdom.” Thus the Messiah, the Divine Redeemer, was from everlasting appointed to the mediatorial throne.

“Wisdom is more precious than rubies” (Proverbs 3:15). We value the beautiful ruby; but what is a precious stone to the knowledge of Jesus?

“She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her” (Proverbs 3:18.) When Paradise was lost there was a flaming fire to keep man from the tree of life; but now, through the Savior, he may eat, and live forever.

“I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me” (Proverbs 8:17.) Happy those who early come to Jesus, the True Wisdom; “her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.”

St. Paul wrote to Timothy (2 Timothy 3:15 NASB)—“from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”

Dear young reader, have you come to Jesus, the True Wisdom, to guide you through this world? Then happy are you. He will safely lead you; in every perplexity, he will be your guide. Amidst the dangers, temptations, fascinations of this world, which are besetting your path, he will keep you; and from the subtle errors by which so many are drawn away, by keeping near to Christ the True Wisdom you will be safe.
