We May Encounter God in Unexpected Places
Today's Devotional
When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven”—Genesis 28:16,17 (NIV).
We sometimes meet with God where we little thought of meeting with him. He is where we did not think he had been; he is found where we asked not for him. Wherever we are—in the city or in the desert, in the house or in the field, in the shop or in the street— we may keep up our intercourse with heaven if it be not our own fault. Nothing can separate us from God and his love but our sins.
About the author and the source
First Thoughts, whose author is identified only as J.P., provides a short Bible reading for each day of the year—usually three lines or less—and a short commentary that indicates the gist of the text. J. P. wrote that the book: “assumes that the true Christian desires… that his ‘first thoughts’ should be holy thoughts.”
