Sermon on the Passing of a Pioneer - 1870

Jackson Kemper, frontier bishop.

Introduction

Jackson Kemper was a priest of the Episcopal Church who labored to see the Western frontier of the United States evangelized. He rode long miles, preached thousands of sermons, founded colleges, and organized dioceses in California, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. He died on 24 May 1870. His last words to David Keene (who preached his funeral sermon on this day 29 May, 1870), were “I hope I have been faithful; I hope I have kept the faith.”

Quote

“The life of our dear departed, and venerable Bishop was all this. In holy service and length of days surely the blessing of Israel was upon it; and his, if ever man’s was, was the death of the righteous—a noble Christian life, crowned with a peaceful and beautiful death.”
